Corn snakes are a popular pet snake species for both beginner and experienced snake keepers. They are docile, easy to care for and come in a variety of beautiful colors and patterns.
How to Care for a Pet Corn Snake
In this article, we'll cover everything you need to know to provide proper care for your pet corn snake.
1. Housing
Corn snakes require a spacious enclosure with a secure lid. A 20-gallon tank is adequate for a single adult corn snake, but large corn snakes will require larger spaces.
2. Heating
Corn snakes require a basking spot with a temperature range of 85-90°F and an ambient temperature range of 75-80°F.
3. Lighting
Corn snakes do not require UV lighting but need a 12-hour light and dark cycle to maintain a healthy circadian rhythm.
4. Substrate
Use a substrate that is easy to clean and maintain. Aspen wood shavings and recycled paper materials are good choices.
5. Feeding
Corn snakes are carnivorous and require a diet of appropriately sized mice. They eat pinkie mice when they are small and adult mice when they are full grown. Feed your snake once every 5-7 days.
6. Handling
Corn snakes are docile but can become stressed if handled too often. Handle your snake for short periods once or twice a week.
7. Shedding
While snakes don't have fur, they do have skin that sheds. Adult corn snakes will completely shed their skin two to three times a year.
8. Health
Regularly check your snake for any signs of illness, such as lethargy, lack of appetite, or respiratory issues. If you suspect your snake is sick, take it to a reptile veterinarian as soon as possible.
